Tommies Win 7-0 against the Crandall Chargers

Fredericton, NB – The St. Thomas University Tommies thrashed the Crandall University Chargers 7-0 on Saturday afternoon, and also booked their place in this year's playoffs.

The Tommies needed a win to ensure that they would automatically qualify for the playoffs. STU coach, David Itoafa, spoke after the match about his feelings that the team secured their playoff berth.

"It was an amazing experience for the players and for the seniors too. It's so nice to come out and score a lot of goals and really claim and say we're going to playoffs."

The Tommies spent the majority of the game in the Crandall half and were constantly calling Crandall goalkeeper into action. Rachel Haanstra (Fredericton, NB) came off the bench to grab herself a hat trick in the second half.

Itoafa said, "Really good for Rachel that she was able to get a couple goals and you could see she wanted to score more and nothing could stop her today."

The game was full of goals from outside the penalty box as Caitlyn Steeves (Hampton, NB) and Ella Mercer (Rothesay, NB) both scoring from long-range. The pick of the bunch was Steeve's second goal that pinged in off the post and into the goal. Itoafa also talked after the game about Steeves's performance.

"Fantastic, like always, the best player on the field. We even talked before the game and we said make sure you don't take as many long shots and she didn't listen but sometimes it is better."

The game was capped off with captain, Abby Cameron (Fredericton, NB), emphatically scoring a penalty to give STU their seventh goal.
