Gordon's 1st Career Goal Lifts Seawolves Over Chargers
Saint John, NB – The University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves defeated the Crandall University Chargers 1-0 on Saturday afternoon thanks in large part to contributions from a trio of rookies.
It was Alumni Weekend at UNB lending a hand to the boisterous crowd at Canada Games Stadium, including many former Seawolves.
Both teams came out of the gate flying as there were chances at both ends of the pitch, but it was the Seawolves who capitalized first, earning a corner in the 37th minute. Rookie Jenna Brenton (Upper Tantallon, NS) stepped up to take the corner and found her teammate Grace Gordon (Kelowna, BC) who connected on a header for her first career Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Assocation goal, which would prove to be the winner.
"It was really exciting," said Gordon on scoring both her first goal and the game winner. "I couldn't ask for a better team after the goal. They all came and celebrated with me."
After the goal, both back lines and keepers locked it down for their respective teams with Seawolves rookie Kaitlyn Brzezicki (Sherwood Park, AB) and Chargers' Priyanka Rajput stopping every shot they faced from that point. Brzezicki with 2 saves and Rajput with 7 saves in the match.
"Our gameplan was to work on the fundamentals and to work as a team," added Gordon. We had a lot of drive to keep a clean sheet. We had a lot of set backs in the match, but it showed that we can push through the hard battles and still get the outcome we wanted."
The Seawolves move to 3-1-2 on the season and the Chargers fall to 1-4-0. Next action for the Chargers will be Sunday when they head to Fredericton, NB to play the STU Tommies, while the Seawolves will head to Halifax September 28 and 29 for a pair of games against Mount Saint Vincent and University of King's College.
