Chargers Announce Men’s Volleyball Program

MONCTON, NB - Crandall University is pleased to announce the addition of Men's Volleyball to its athletics programs, starting in September 2023.

"Four years ago we added women's volleyball to our programs and it was a natural progression for us to add a men's program", said Jim Druart, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Crandall. "There are limited opportunities in the Maritimes for men looking to play volleyball at the college or university level, so by adding a men's program, we are offering a chance for athletes to take that next step and also receive a high quality education."

Garret West has been named the program's first head coach. He is an alumnus of Crandall University, completing his Bachelor of Education in 2009, and is no stranger to the ACAA as his volleyball career included playing four years at St. Thomas University, where he was honored as a three-time ACAA All-Star. West will be joined by assistant coaches Andrew Bidlake and Sean Murray.

"I've known Garrett for over 12 years," Druart added. "He brings vast experience as a player, coach and administrator. He has worked tirelessly to build men's volleyball in Southeast New Brunswick. He is a highly qualified, certified coach, with experience coaching at the provincial and club levels. He is not only a student of the game, but a great teacher of the game, mentoring athletes and coaches. We're excited to have Garrett on board as our inaugural head coach and we're looking forward to September 2023!"

West has over 15 years of coaching experience in the NB high school, club and summer elite programs. He is a NCCP Certified Performance coach who led the 2023 New Brunswick Canada Games men's indoor team. Garrett is currently a teacher at his alma mater, Moncton High School.

With the addition of the Chargers in 2023, the ACAA will expand to five teams, joining St. Thomas University, Université Saint Anne, UNB Saint John and Holland College.
